Two more topics have fallen into the arena of political urgency.
The issue of Honduras and how the Obama Administration has responded to the forced exile, in his pajamas, of dictator-in-training Manuel Zelaya has receded in importance to the level of 2 partial columns on page 9 of the front section of the paper. There is little new on the situation except that the OAS was going to meet and consider suspending the membership of Honduras in that club. In response the interim president of Honduras, Roberto Michelitti, withdrew Honduras from the OAS. The obvious conclusion is that membership in the OAS is not of much importance. Also, Zelaya has again delayed his promised return to Honduras and to power.
But the urgency comes from an item little publicized. Unless you really monitored the actions of Washington you would not have known that as the Honduras pajama exile was in its developmental final stages, Obama elected to reestablish formal diplomatic relations with Venezuela and its socialist anti-American leader, Hugo Chavez. This leads to only a pair of logical explanations as to why Washington has elected to oppose the protection of democracy in Central America. Choice one is that Obama made a decision to ally himself as much as possible with Chavez [They both are big government socialists] and ignored the warnings of the State Department as to what was going on in Honduras. Choice two is that Obama had no idea of the state of affairs in Honduras [Does not speak well of our Central American intelligence efforts] and acted in ignorance when he reestablished the said diplomatic relationship. Because of ego [can't admit he erred] and of fear of being seen as politically inconsistent, Obama opted to protect himself and not democracy. Self over democracy or socialism over democracy present a real urgency for Americans to address.
The second matter of urgency has also been generally unpublicised. The nations of China, Russia and India have just concluded a conference that was convened to consider removing the American dollar as the world monetary standard. This is not the first time this year that this topic has been addressed but the joining of these particular nations is unique and is foreboding. The size, influence and economic standing [Remember how great the holdings of China are in our private and governmental financial obligations] can almost insure that what they decided will be implemented worldwide. The fact that this meeting was even held and that America was omitted speaks volumes as to the world's view of the American economy, the value of the American dollar and the ability of the American President to pull the United States out of its economic mire. The urgency is what if anything our President can or is doing to contravene and neutralize this movement.
It is reaching a point where the goal of making Obama a one term President in 2012 is being overcome by a desire to just reach 2012 as a viable nation with a viable economy.
